Wondering if we should add some kind of "Honorable Mentions" section, where more obscure receivers create unique SMTP responses for mail they don't want.

Examples from Laura Villevieille (Sailthru) are:

  • 550 ip in prison
  • 554 5.7.1 The recipient definitively does not want your mail. It will not be delivered but analyzed again. We may feed it to a spam blacklist.
  • 550 5.7.1 : Recipient address rejected: Inactive MailBox, not poped for more than 6 months
  • 554 5.7.1 : Sender address rejected: Dumb.

Haha. I love this idea! Would we be able to tie these responses back to a specific domain/server? Or were you thinking we'd keep it anonymous?

We definitely could, depends on how much we want to tease/shame the receiver. 😂

But in general I think it could be interesting to record how irregular bounces can be. The wild customization of them is what makes automated bounce processing so difficult to get right.

I don't want to shame the receiver or anything, so we should keep them anonymous. Do you have any more examples of responses we could add to this page?

We could also have a little fun with this page since it's meant to be funny/weird :) I'll cook something up.

There's also:
smtp;551 5.7.1 Go away!
smtp;451 I will never accept any mail, try other MX host
smtp;553 5.3.0 address@example.com... Never heard of that user
smtp;450 4.2.0 address@example.com: Recipient address rejected: Hold your horses slick, you are coming on too strong. Try again in a few minutes and maybe you will get lucky.
smtp;451 4.7.1 Transaction is greylisted for 111 seconds. Search the internet for 'greylisting' if you don't know what this means.
smtp;550 5.7.1 Your email has been rejected because your email contained profanity or a variation and violated your user agreement with Example School District. Please remove the inappropriate words and resend your email. Thank you in advance for your compliance and cooperation!
