OSGi Runtime with ClassNotFoundException: com.lowagie.text.FontFactory #1142

Hello Team,

I updated the BIRT OSGi runtime used in our application (deployed on WildFly 27, running on java 11) from version 4.8 to 4.10.
When I try to generate a report I get a java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.lowagie.text.FontFactory.

I also tried BIRT 4.12, but I get the same error:

I've seen that iText has been replaced with OpenPDF. Maybe this change is related to my problem.

Do you have an idea what may cause my problem or what I can do to investigate further?

I had the same issue with an older BIRT version 4.6 with Apache Tomcat.
An the reason of it was that my Windows Application Server got a new installation and the Java installation wasn't correct at all.
After new installation the error was fixed.

I will say that your error could also be caused on installation task.
Do you have the option (only for testing) to install Java 17 instead of Java 11 for comparable testing....?

I just tested Java 17 (Temurin jdk-17.0.5+8) and I got exactly the same error.

I did some further testing with a minimal application that uses BIRT 4.10 OSGi to generate a report, and encountered the same issue again: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/lowagie/text/FontFactory

Additionally I've recognized that there is a logfile present in the ReportEngine/platform/configuration directory containing multiple entries like these:

I found this Bugreport for OpenPDF.
Maybe this is related ...

... yes, it seems that upgrading the OpenPDF Library solves the issue.

I fixed the error through upgrading the OpenPDF library.

These two steps are required:

Download Version 1.3.30 of OpenPDF, copy it to the folder ReportEngine/platform/plugins and rename it to com.github.librepdf.openpdf-1.3.30.jar.
Open the file ReportEngine/platform/configuration/org.eclipse.equinox.simpleconfigurator/bundles.info in a text editor and change the line ...
com.github.librepdf.openpdf,1.3.26,plugins/com.github.librepdf.openpdf_1.3.26.jar,4,false
... to ...
com.github.librepdf.openpdf,1.3.30,plugins/com.github.librepdf.openpdf-1.3.30.jar,4,false

With these changes the BIRT OSGi runtime can generate reports again.
I think the library needs to be upgraded in the next BIRT release ...
