What?
This project is much older and needs upgrading to latest android sdk version

Did the upgrade + gradle
Results
The app can now run on a physical device + emulator as it should.
NOTE
With the latest gradle update, there is need to rewrite the flavors for the different builds of the app but a workaround was added to use the production code - this app mostly used to fetch data and so has no side effects on the servers - testing this means it wont have any issues that are dangerous to the providers.
