One major problem with nix and adopting it for projects is its steep learning curve.
For devs to benefit right away without having to learn nix... devbox. It provides a devbox.json (similar to package.json) that is self-explanatory and leverages nix under the hood. Beyond that, there are other great perks, like tooling similar to docker compose for managing development processes and providing devcontainer to ide's like vscode.
