I could not possibly agree more with this. I pine for this feature every single day. |

I figure a three-way toggle would suffice: auto, expanded, collapsed. |

I'd get rid of auto expansion all together.. there should only be two modes - expanded or collapsed. auto expanding is nothing more than a bad UX. Having the whole UI shift left & right on mouse hover is equivalent to pocking the users eyes with 10 sewing pins (5 on each eye) and while at it, slapping them in the face to the point they're temporarily disoriented. |
@uboness you have such a way with words. And so precise: 5 pins, no more, no less. I always thought replacing the expand/collapse with tooltips that show up as soon as you hover would be nice and unobtrusive if they appeared to the right of the link you're hovering over. |

I think it'd be nice to let the user pin the sidebar or make it sticky to prevent it from sliding in and out. A power user or experience user will probably remember what the icons represent and would prefer it to always stay collapsed. Or a new user or someone who's more forgetful may want it to always be visible.
