I just got one of those on a amd64 12 core,16GiB ECC memory, arc limited to 1GiB, one root zpool with dedup and compression on a USB stick and one raidz zpool on 6 2TB drives. At the time of the crash, had an nbd-server serving a 16GiB zvol with volblocksize = 4k and refreservation = 0 on the raidz zpool, the remote nbd client is hanging writing 512 bytes worth of data.

Had to hard-reset the machine as any disk i/o hangs even on the root zpool.

ubuntu 11.10, 0.6.0.39-0ubuntu1~oneiric1 from daily ppa, 3.1.2
kernel from kernel-ppa.

I had been transfering data via nbd to several zvols for a while without problems. This crash occurred while both nbd and rsync (on zfs, not zvol) where taking place concurrently.

I could be wrong on this but dbuf_do_evict releases the db_mtx mutex before calling dbuf_destroy. And because the ref count is no longer protected we could get past the ASSERT in debuf_destroy by some other thread getting a copy of db. Everybody else seems to hold the mutex while destroying this object...

Yes, I see what your saying but holding the db->mtx over the dbuf_destroy() call would also be dangerous. Once dbuf_destroy() returns that memory might to longer be addressable. There are also all the assertions which make it pretty clear that at this point no references should be held. Of course something is wrong and this code does feel racy, just look at the comment over dbuf_clear(). Anyway, this is going to take some more thought to sort out.

The backtrace was an infinite loop of `vdev_queue_io_to_issue()` invoking
`zio_execute()` until it overran the stack. vdev_queue_io_to_issue() will ony
invoke `zio_execute()` on raidz vdevs when aggregation I/Os are generated to
improve aggregation continuity. These I/Os do not trigger any writes. However,
it appears that they can be generated in such a way that they recurse
infinitely upon return to `vdev_queue_io_to_issue()`. As a consequence, we see
the number of parents by 1 each time the recursion returns to
`vdev_raidz_io_start()`.

The backtrace was an infinite loop of `vdev_queue_io_to_issue()` invoking
`zio_execute()` until it overran the stack. vdev_queue_io_to_issue() will ony
invoke `zio_execute()` on raidz vdevs when aggregation I/Os are generated to
improve aggregation continuity. These I/Os do not trigger any writes. However,
it appears that they can be generated in such a way that they recurse
infinitely upon return to `vdev_queue_io_to_issue()`.

This occurred when ztest was simulating a scrub under heavy I/O load. Under
those circumstances, it was possible for a mix of noop I/Os for aggregation
continuity and the I/O elevator to generate arbitrarily deep recursion.

This patch modifies ZFS to propapage a recursion counter inside the zio_t
objects such that IOs will be redispatched upon reaching a given recursion
depth.  We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We
cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that
can prevent a zio from notifying its parent.

This occurred when ztest was simulating a scrub under heavy I/O load. Under
those circumstances, it was possible for a mix of noop I/Os for aggregation
continuity and the I/O elevator to generate arbitrarily deep recursion.

This patch modifies ZFS to propapage a recursion counter inside the zio_t
objects such that IOs will be redispatched upon reaching a given recursion
depth.  We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We
cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that
can prevent a zio from notifying its parent.

This occurred when ztest was simulating a scrub under heavy I/O load. Under
those circumstances, it was possible for a mix of noop I/Os for aggregation
continuity and the I/O elevator to generate arbitrarily deep recursion.

This patch modifies ZFS to propapage a recursion counter inside the zio_t
objects such that IOs will be redispatched upon reaching a given recursion
depth.  We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We
cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that
can prevent a zio from notifying its parent.

This occurred when ztest was simulating a scrub under heavy I/O load. Under
those circumstances, it was possible for a mix of noop I/Os for aggregation
continuity and the I/O elevator to generate arbitrarily deep recursion.

This patch modifies ZFS to propapage a recursion counter inside the zio_t
objects such that IOs will be redispatched upon reaching a given recursion
depth.  We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We
cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that
can prevent a zio from notifying its parent.

reclaim: increase number of concurrent GetObject's (openzfs#470)

By increasing the number of concurrent GetObject's used by free space
reclaiming, we can increase the overall rate of freeing from ~130MB/s to
~350MB/s (with a randwritecomp workload on r5n.2xlarge).

Also reorganize the way we do the throttling so that we block in
try_reclaim_frees(), rather than spawning an unlimited number of tasks
which will each throttle themself.

Also increase the number of concurrent GetObject's used when reading an
ObjectBasedLog (e.g. the pending_frees_log).

Use "exec" to replace "start_zoa" with agent process (openzfs#470)

The "start_zoa" script calls the agent as the last thing it does, and
that agent process runs indefinitely. We can slightly optimize things by
using "exec" to start the agent, such that the "start_zoa" process can
be killed, since it's no longer needed at that point.
